First grade is a year of tremendous growth. Students move from learning the routines of school to becoming increasingly confident and independent learners. They are strengthening foundational skills while beginning to apply them in new and meaningful ways.
Students continue developing their reading, writing, and math skills while building fluency, comprehension, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking. They ask questions, explain their thinking, make connections, and begin to take greater ownership of their learning.Across science and social studies, students explore their communities and the world around them through observation, investigation, discussion, and hands-on experiences.
Students will be encouraged to read widely, write often, explain their thinking, and solve problems in different ways. They will practice working independently as well as collaborating with classmates.First graders are also learning that being a successful student means more than completing a task. It means listening, contributing, making thoughtful choices, and taking care of themselves and their community.
First grade students are becoming more independent every day. We celebrate their willingness to ask questions, take risks, solve problems, and discover what they can do.
