Growing Curiosity, Community, and Stewardship

What began as a small effort to bring students outdoors has grown into a vibrant network of learning gardens surrounding Tuckahoe Elementary School. Early photos show students, teachers, and volunteers working together to plant flowers, build beds, and transform unused outdoor spaces into living classrooms.

From those first plantings along the school walls and courtyard areas, the program expanded to include gardens, habitats, outdoor classrooms, and hands-on science spaces. Students helped dig soil, plant trees, observe wildlife, and even contribute artwork inspired by nature. Today, the outdoor learning program connects science, art, history, and environmental stewardship. The gardens serve as places where students explore ecosystems, practice teamwork, and experience the natural world as part of their everyday learning.
